Dear Parents:
Whether your children are returning to Loyola in the fall or approaching graduation and a new, exciting phase of their lives, I suspect more than a few of you are wondering how to jumpstart the critical conversations you need to have about their past year, its meaning, and their future plans. Our lead story this issue offers a few suggestions, tailored to each class year, about how to get the ball rolling on these often difficult conversations. I hope you find our advice helpful. I also hope you will continue to speak to your sons and daughters about the importance of protecting their own health. As you know, we experienced a prolonged period of mumps diagnoses among undergraduate students this spring. While new cases should slow significantly now as students are no longer in such close proximity over the summer, the incubation period of mumps is quite long at up to 25 days. Please continue to encourage your sons and daughters to wash hands frequently, refrain from sharing cups and utensils, cover mouths and noses while coughing and sneezing, and avoid close interactions such as hugging and kissing those who might have been exposed to mumps or other communicable diseases. I thank you for your continued engagement with and support of Loyola, and hope to see you on campus in the fall—even those of you whose children are graduating this year! Greetings, and happy spring! I know you are all anxiously awaiting the end of the semester and the opportunity to spend more time with your sons and daughters. I hope they are all marking the end of a happy, healthy, and successful year at Loyola, that they are pleased with the experiences they have had, and that they have outstanding plans in place for the summer and the coming year.
