Communities across the country are grappling with a particularly vigorous flu season this year, and colleges and universities have not been spared. As Loyola’s students returned from Christmas break, the Student Health and Education Services office prepared for the possibility of a flu outbreak on campus, where the risk of infection is greatly increased with young people—among the least likely to worry about getting the flu or a vaccine—living in close proximity.
Efforts continue to keep the number of flu cases on campus to a minimum:
- Students are still encouraged to come to the Health Center for flu vaccinations, which are available on a walk-in basis. It takes one to two weeks to develop immunity after the shot is received, and those who have been vaccinated are 60 percent less likely to catch the flu. Vaccination is especially important for students with chronic illnesses or those who may be immune compromised. In addition, students who plan to travel for Spring Break would also benefit from vaccination.
- Social media, flyers, and bulletins on campus continue to offer information about signs and symptoms of flu infection as well as prevention steps, which include careful hand washing and the use of hand sanitizers.
- Students who are ill can call the Health Center at 410-617-5055 to make an appointment to be seen by a provider or to obtain over-the-phone medical advice. The clinic is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. An after-hours physician on-call service is available at Sinai Hospital by calling 410-583-9396.
- Ill students are advised to stay out of class and/or work until symptoms subside. Student Health and Education Services works with students and the office of academic affairs to ensure smooth transitions back to class.
