UNITE experience connects students with the materially poor; next immersion program set for February

UNITEUrban Needs Introduced through Experience, known as UNITE, is a weekend immersion experience sponsored by the Center for Community Service and Justice. The program gives students a chance to travel with a small group into Baltimore to gain a better understanding of the realities of people who are materially poor and/or experiencing homelessness in the city. The next UNITE program, the annual Retreat to the Streets, takes place Feb. 17 -19.

“Retreat to the Streets is a unique approach to the UNITE program designed to appeal to students who want to explore the deep connection between their service and spirituality,” said Margarita Dubocq, assistant director of poverty concerns and faith connections in Loyola’s Center for Community Service and Justice. “It offers opportunities for shared prayer, reflection on the experience using Ignatian spirituality, and intentional connections between Catholic Social Teaching and Jesuit education.”

Each UNITE weekend includes an experience of direct service in the meal program; educational statistics on material poverty and homelessness; one-on-one interaction with people who have dealt with or are currently dealing with issues of hunger and homelessness; and group discussion and reflection activities. All UNITE participants stay on the second floor of the Beans and Bread Center.

Students interested in participating in UNITE: Retreat to the Streets must apply by Feb. 6. For more information, contact Dubocq at 410-617-5352 or mdubocq@loyola.edu.
