Loyola took top honors for Maryland in the 2008 Mid-Atlantic RecycleMania competition, which this year pit 74 mid-Atlantic colleges and universities against each other to see which one could recycle the most in 10 weeks. Loyola recycled 118,120 pounds, helping to bring the mid-Atlantic region’s total to 7.7 million pounds of recycled waste.
The top-recycling school from each of the mid-Atlantic’s six participating states was determined by the amount of recycled waste per full-time student. Loyola recycled the most out of Maryland’s 14 participating schools with 27.82 pounds per student. More than 400 schools competed nationwide, recycling a total of 58.6 million pounds of material. RecycleMania is affiliated with the Environmental Protection Agency’s WasteWise program, a free partnership helping U.S. organizations eliminate or reduce costly municipal solid waste.
