Loyola College Hosts "Christian Theology and Islam" Conference

The Christian Theology and Islam Conference, sponsored by the Center for Catholic and Evangelical Theology, will take place at Loyola College in Maryland’s North Charles Street campus from Monday, June 9 – Wednesday, June 11.

The conference, an intra-Christian conversation about the Christian faith against the background of Islam, begins Monday with “Is the Father of Jesus the God of Muhammed?” by Timothy George, dean of Beeson Divinity School.

Tuesday’s presentations include “The Unity of Trinity of God: Christian Doctrinal Development in Response to Islam” by Sidney H. Griffith, professor of Semitic and Egyptian Languages and Literatures at the Catholic University of America; “Islam and the Pedagogy of God” by Sandra Keating, assistant professor of theology at Providence College and a member of the Vatican Commission on Religion Relations with Muslims; “The Trinity through Abrahamic Dialogue” by David Burrell, Hesburgh chair of theology and philosophy at the University of Notre Dame; and a banquet address by Robert Wilken, religious studies professor at the University of Virginia.

The conference concludes Wednesday with “Indonesian Women Practicing Dialogue” by Nelly Van Doorn-Harder, associate professor of world religions and ethics at Valparaiso University; and “Evasive Maneuvers: Sidestepping Islamic Challenges” by Mark Swanson, professor of Christian-Muslim studies and interfaith relations at the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago.

All lectures are open to the public. Overnight accommodations are available. For information on program fees or to register, visit the conference Web site.
