Loyola College in Maryland, included among the 368 best colleges and universities in the 2009 Princeton Review guide, has also been recognized for offering the nation's best residence halls. Last year, Loyola's residence halls were ranked second in the country. "We are very excited because we work very hard to give our students a positive residential experience," Sarah Mansfield, Associate Director of Student Life for Housing Operations, told Richard Sher, a reporter for Baltimore CBS affiliate WJZ-13 in a report on the ranking. CBS' Early Show also included coverage of Loyola's ranking, during which The Princeton Review's Robert Franek also lauded Loyola's overall quality.
Loyola operates 14 residence halls, including a mix of traditional doubles, suites and apartments. The facilities have long been recognized for their spaciousness, quality of maintenance and ability to foster a sense of community on campus. More than 80 percent of the College's 3,500 undergraduates choose to live on campus. The ranking lists in The Best 368 Colleges are based on The Princeton Review's survey of 120,000 students (about 325 per campus on average) attending the 368 colleges in the book. A college's appearance on these lists is attributable to a high consensus among its surveyed students about the subject. The 80-question survey asked students to rate their schools on several topics and report on their campus experiences at them. Ranking lists report the top 20 schools in categories that range from best professors, administration, and campus food to lists based on student body political leanings, race/class relations, sports interests, and other aspects of campus life. The Princeton Review is a New York-based company known for its test preparation, education, and college admission services. It is not affiliated with Princeton University and it is not a magazine.
