Loyola to Host Blackfriars Stage Company Performances

Loyola will welcome the Blackfriars Stage Company, a young, innovative acting company that stages fast-paced shows that recreate for modern audiences Shakespeare’s plays and other classics while remaining true to the original texts, from Sept. 24 – 26 on the College’s North Charles Street campus.

A touring troupe for the Blackfriars Theater of the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, VA, the Company will perform three plays over three days, each about two hours long. The productions include original musical compositions, minimal stage props and costuming, attention to the complexities of Shakespeare’s language, a great deal of energy and significant audience interaction.

The Company’s first performance, Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors, will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 24. The play tells a wild story of mistaken identities among two sets of identical twins.

On Thursday, Sept. 25, the Company will perform Shakespeare’s Hamlet, a tragedy in which a prince seeks revenge on his uncle who has murdered his father and taken over the throne.

The final production, Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead will be performed on Friday, Sept. 26. The show is a comical expansion upon two minor characters from Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

All shows begin at 7:30 p.m. in McManus Theater in the DeChiaro College Center. There is no charge for admission and all shows are open to the public.
