Loyola to host ninth annual independent
meeting of the Ancient Philosophy Society

Loyola will host the ninth annual independent meeting of the Ancient Philosophy Society from April 23-26, at Loyola’s Timonium Graduate Center, located at 2034 Greenspring Drive. The Society provides a forum for diverse scholarship on ancient Greek and Roman texts.

Session topics include “On Knowledge and Self-Knowledge,” “Plato on Rhetoric and History,” “Aristotle on Ethics, Politics and Poetics,” “On Plato’s Symposium,” “On Perplexity,” “On Eros and Friendship,” “On Aristotelian Biology and Embodiment” and “Platonic Humor.” Round table discussions will center on Pre-Socratics, Homer and Romans.

Joanne Waugh, associate professor of philosophy at the University of South Florida, will present Friday’s keynote address, "The Platonic Dialogues as Paideia." Dorothea Frede, a professor of philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Hamburg, will present Saturday’s keynote address, "On the Unity and Completeness of Aristotle's Scheme of Virtues.”

Conference registration and membership to APS for the 2009-10 year costs $140 for individuals and $110 for students. Conference registration for those who are already registered members for 2009-10 is $60. Saturday evening’s banquet costs an additional $50 per person and a copy of all papers presented at the meeting is an additional $20.
