Loyola will host its second annual Loyola Literacy Leader Award event on Tuesday, May 19, from 5-7 p.m. at the Loyola/Notre Dame Library. Terry Meier, Ed.D., associate professor and chair of the language and literacy department at Wheelock College, will deliver the evening’s keynote address, titled “Using African-American Children’s Literature in the Classroom.” The evening will also feature the presentation of the Literacy Leader Award, which is presented to a graduate of Loyola’s reading/literacy program who promotes literacy within the school, local, state or national community; demonstrates innovation in practice; exhibits principled leadership within the school or community; and models lifelong learning as a member of the professional literacy community. Keturah Nilsson, ’04, director of instruction at the Southwest Baltimore Charter School, will be presented with this year’s award. Nilsson graduated from Loyola with a M.Ed. as a reading specialist.
