Space preferences not already submitted should be e-mailed to Chantele Johnson, assistant director in the records office, by Nov. 30. Technology Uncensored session Dec. 2
Last semester we introduced Technology Uncensored to the campus, a lunch and learn series discussing new technologies here at Loyola. These sessions were such a success and there is so much to learn and share that we can’t help but start a tradition! Remaining sessions include:

  • Dec. 2 - (Get a) Second Life *Peer-to-Peer session

The remaining session is specifically geared toward Loyola faculty members (look for the notation of the “Peer-to-Peer” sessions). These peer-to-peer sessions are led by fellow Loyola faculty members, and will introduce topics and ideas for use within your classroom.

All sessions will take place from noon – 1 p.m. in College Center 114. Lunch is on us!

For more information and to register, visit the Tech Uncensored Web site.

Early reminder: Summer Research Grant applications due Jan. 15
Faculty wishing to submit a proposal for a 2010 Summer Research Grant are reminded that proposals are due no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 15. This is a blind competition; therefore, the proposal should contain no identifying information. While preparing proposals, faculty should consult the Summer Research Guidelines. In order to conserve paper resources, proposals for the 2010 competition will be submitted online. Both the guidelines and online submission form are accessible from the Summer Research Grants page of the office of research and sponsored programs Web site. Also available from the Web site is a document on Suggestions for a Strong Summer Research Proposal. If you have additional questions, please contact Carron DeGrass at ext. 2561 or cdegrass@loyola.edu.

Faculty assembly Nov. 20
All faculty members are invited to the second faculty assembly of the year, which will be held on Friday, Nov. 20 from 3 - 5 p.m. in AWSC 4th Floor Program Room. The primary agenda item for the assembly will be a discussion of the proposed Living/Learning program for first year students. The two co-chairs of the First-Year Living/Learning Communities Task Force, Dr. Katherine Brennan (history) and Mr. Mike Puma (associate director of student life), will be presenting the committee’s proposal.

Implementation of the First Year Initiative in our current Strategic Plan is set for fall 2013. If you are considering teaching in the program, currently teach first year students, have ever taught in Alpha/FE/Collegium, or are interested in our academic mission, then you should come to this meeting! During the coming academic year, the Academic Senate and the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee will be considering this proposal. Please come to the assembly and share your thoughts on this important initiative.

For more information, contact  ederrrickson@loyola.edu.

Center for the Humanities sponsors Summer Study Grants for affiliate faculty
This program funds six weeks of concentrated reading of a coherently organized list of materials for affiliate faculty. In the fine arts, the project may be composed of media appropriate to the applicant's discipline, i.e. works of art in various media rather than books. The program is intended to recognize the contributions of affiliate faculty to the University and to the lives of our students. The Center hopes to award three of these $3,000 grants each year.

Study grants may be used for three things: scholarly research, teaching enhancement, and intellectual development. Ordinarily, the Center reserves one grant for research, and a second for teaching. The third is left open for applications in any of the three categories. Applicants should indicate whether a specific study project is designed to support research, teaching, or intellectual development.

Any portion of the $3,000 grant may be deposited, at the recipient's request, in a special pre-tax account to be used for reimbursement for expenses associated with the summer study grant (for instance, for the purchase of texts, or for travel associated with the grant.) Unspent funds from this account will be returned to the recipient at the end of the study period (after appropriate taxes, if any, are deducted.)

For more information on eligibility, standards for proposal, procedures, and terms, visit the Center for the Humanites Web site. Applications are due in January.
