Outdoor Adventure has been created by the Outdoor Adventure Experience (OAE) within the department of recreational sports, as a multi-day wilderness excursion for incoming first-year students. The trip is designed to allow participants to make lasting friendships, ease the transition to college life, and have fun with new experiences and activities. Programs include backpacking, rock climbing, sea kayaking, whitewater kayaking, and canoeing. Students are placed in a group with about 10 other students led by upper-class student leaders or alumni. This small group size allows participants to really get to know one another. Through casual conversation, games, and activities, students will create a bond they will carry with them through their time at Loyola. To ease the often uncomfortable transition to college life, the instructor teams will field questions and lead discussions on the issues and apprehensions (both academic and social) that are often on the first-year student's mind. The student leaders were in this very position themselves not so long ago and, therefore, look forward to helping others understand Loyola's community. The leader teams will also offer their knowledge on campus services, clubs, and ways to get involved. In addition, OAE realizes that for many students, this will be their first time in the outdoors, so the whole trip is designed to explore the parallels between this new experience and the one awaiting them at Loyola. Quite simply, this is an opportunity to have fun and learn about classmates, Loyola University Maryland, the natural environment - and yourself. Trips dates: Sunday, Aug. 28 - Thursday, Sept. 1 Cost: $300 per person Trip Description (please read this section carefully): Enthusiasm, an adventurous spirit, and a willingness to try something new are all that is needed! No previous experience is necessary and all group gear will be provided. All wilderness adventure trips are backcountry experiences and all will involve camping and a primitive wilderness environment (no showers). While each trip will focus on its specific discipline, all trips have the same overall group goals. You will get to rate your preference of adventures from the exciting choices of backpacking, climbing, sea kayaking, whitewater kayaking, and canoeing. Though we make every effort to get you into one of your two top choices, groups will be determined solely by the OAE staff. Please get your registration in early as these trips do fill up! Questions?
