The MetaFrame Presentation Server, powered by Citrix, is a server solution that enables users to access Windows programs over the World Wide Web. Everyone can use the MetaFrame Presentation Server: students, faculty, staff and administrators. Every operating system can use the MetaFrame Presentation Server: Windows, Mac, Linux and UNIX users. In other words, the MetaFrame Presentation Server would allow a staff member, using a Macintosh, to access software that previously was only available on Windows. Likewise, a computer science student, using Linux, could do the same. The following instructions will help you to use the MetaFrame Presentation Server. Logging In To access the MetaFrame Presentation Server, click here or use the link in the “What’s Here” box on the left side of this Web page. When you arrive at the MetaFrame Presentation Server Web site, you will see a page that will look like the following graphic:
Use the “Login” box to log into the MetaFrame Presentation Server. Enter your Novell User ID and your password in the spaces provided. Next, select the appropriate "Context" using the drop-down list below the "Password" field (for example, a faculty member would chose "Faculty" as the context). If your appropriate context is not listed, select the "Find Context" option. In the example below, the faculty member, J. Doe, logs in as "jdoe" with the correct password and the context of "IS.LOYOLA."
When you have finished, click the “Log In” button to log into the MetaFrame Presentation Server. Please Note: You cannot log in to the MetaFrame Presentation Server from more than one computer simultaneously! If you have difficulties logging in, make sure that you are not logged in from another computer. To ensure that this does not happen, remember to log out when you have finished using the MetaFrame Presentation Server. If this is your first time logging in, you will be presented with a license agreement. If you accept the license agreement, and wish to begin using the MetaFrame Presentation Server, click the “Yes” button at the bottom of the window.
Upon a successful login, you will be presented with applications that you may use. Your screen will look similar to, but not exactly like the following graphic:
Using the MetaFrame Presentation Server Once you have successfully logged in, you will be presented with applications that you may use. To launch an application, place your mouse over the corresponding icon and click once.
Once you have chosen an application, a new window will open and launch your application. Once the new window opens, you will be asked what level of access you would like to grant to the software to access the files that it might need located on your computer.
It is recommended that you select the “Full Access” option. This will allow you to open files that are located on your computer, or your “G” drive and allow you to save files to your computer, or “G” drive. Additionally, you may set this as the default option by selecting the “Never Ask Me Again” option. When you have made your choice, click the “OK” button to begin using your application. You will notice that a new window has appeared on your computer showing you the application you have selected.
You may use the application as you would if it were installed on your computer. For software training, including most applications found on the MetaFrame Presentation Server, please visit www.loyola.edu/elementk. When you have finished using the application, you may exit the application as you would normally. You may either click the red “x” in the upper right hand corner of the screen, or you may click on the “File” menu and choose the “Exit” option. When you have exited the application, the window will close. An Important Note about Opening and Saving Files from the MetaFrame Presentation Server When wish to work with files that are saved on your computer, you will need to pay close attention to “Open” dialog box of most applications available through the MetaFrame Presentation Server. For example, if a file, which you wish to use, is located on your “C” drive, click on the “File” menu and choose the “Open…” option. When the “Open” dialog box appears, you will notice that you will be taken to a “My Documents” folder.'
Please Note: This is not the “My Documents” folder located on your computer. This is a folder located on the MetaFrame Presentation Server. To navigate to another location, click the drop down box labeled “Look In:” at the top of the dialog box.
To open a file on your “C” drive, click on the line labeled “C$ on ‘Client’ (C:)” underneath the “My Computer” line. This is your computer’s “C” drive. You can then navigate to any folder on your “C” drive. Likewise, you may select the line labeled “USERNAME on ‘Academic\Users” (G:)” (where “USERNAME” is your Novell Username) further down in the list. This is your “G” drive. When you wish to save an active file to your computer, you will need to pay close attention to the “Save” dialog box. For example, if you wish to save a file to your “C” drive, click on the “File” menu and choose the “Save As…” option. When the “Save As” dialog box appears, you will notice that you will be taken to a “My Documents” folder.
Please Note: This is not the “My Documents” folder located on your computer. This is a folder located on the MetaFrame Presentation Server. To navigate to another location, click the drop down box labeled “Save In:” at the top of the dialog box.
To save a file to your “C” drive, click on the line labeled “C$ on ‘Client’ (C:)” underneath the “My Computer” line. This is your computer’s “C” drive. You can then navigate to any folder on your “C” drive. Likewise, you may select the line labeled “USERNAME on ‘Academic\Users” (G:)” (where “USERNAME” is your Novell Username) further down in the list. This is your “G” drive. Additional Options At the top right of the “Applications” section of the MetaFrame Presentation Server Web page, you will have three additional options available to you.
Use the “Refresh” button to refresh the screen. The “Refresh” button is the first button in the group and looks like the following graphic:
Use the “Settings” button to change the way in which you view the applications you select. The “Settings” button is the second in the group and looks like the following graphic:
Clicking this button will change the “Applications” section of the screen to the “Settings” section. This will look similar to, but not exactly like, the following graphic:
The “Presentation Preferences” will present you with options that can change the way the applications are presented on the MetaFrame Presentation Server Web page. It is recommended that you do not adjust these settings. The “Connection Preferences” will preset you with options that can change the way applications are delivered to your computer. It is recommended that you do not adjust these settings. When you have finished with these options, click the “OK” button at the bottom of the screen.
