Ph.D. Program - Learning Goals

Program Goal 1: Departmental Atmosphere (Loyola Graduate Learning Goals 2, 3, 5, 6, &8).

  • Objective 1: To promote a holistic, person-centered, growth-oriented atmosphere in which students, faculty, staff, and supportive external cohorts may explore meaning and purpose in life.
  • Objective 2: To provide for a multicultural, international, ecumenical community within which all can learn, explore, and integrate life’s experiences
  • Objective 3: To provide an atmosphere that is person centered (student centered) in which students learn as much about themselves as they do about their clients and the field of counseling.

Program Goal 2: Academic Learning (Loyola Graduate Learning Goals 1, 6, & 8).

  • Objective 1: To integrate the various components of human learning (physical, psychological, intellectual, social, and spiritual) in an attempt to understand ourselves and our clients.
  • Objective 2: To provide a rigorous academic curriculum that prepares students for working in diverse community settings, from a holistic perspective, while integrating theory and practice.
  • Objective 3: To enable students to acquire a high level of competency in quantitative and qualitative methods to help facilitate life-long scholarly activity.
  • Objective 4: To provide students with the opportunities to learn about instructional theory and methods relevant to modern counselor education

Program Goal 3: Clinical Training (Loyola Graduate Learning Goals 1, 2).

  • Objective 1: To provide self-esteem enhancing and personally enriching academic and clinical experiences.
  • Objective 2: To provide a diverse group of clinical internship experiences in which the student can learn on-site how to integrate didactic knowledge, experiential learning, and spiritual premises.

Program Goal 4: Pastoral Integration (Loyola Graduate Learning Goals 1, 7, & 9).

  • Objective 1: To assist the student in developing as a competent, confident practitioner with a personal style of counseling that is reflective of their counselor educator identity.
  • Objective 2: To be a collegium inviting all connected with our department to a pursuit of truth.

Program Goal 5: Professional Competency and Identity (Loyola Graduate Learning Goals 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, & 8).

  • Objective 1: To evaluate student progress routinely in order to assist the student in developing an ethical, comprehensive clinical style.
  • Objective 2: To assist students with their pursuit of a doctoral level counselor educator identity through fostering student contacts and involvements with professional organizations.
  • Objective 3: To offer continuing educational opportunities that will enhance students’ and graduates’ skills and interests.
  • Objective 4: To provide students with opportunities to develop supervision competencies in mental health settings.
  • Objective 5: To provide students with opportunities to develop instructional and technical competence to meet the needs of higher education in the twenty-first century.
