Vision When I came to Loyola as President in 2005, I was honored to join an institution that has demonstrated its profound commitment to the educational and spiritual traditions of the Society of Jesus, the ideals of liberal education and the development of the whole person since its founding in 1852. Our Jesuit philosophy and our institutional mission leads us to strive to educate men and women of competence, imbued with the desire to seek the greater glory of God in all things, and who are prepared and inspired to learn, lead and serve in a diverse and changing world. The Catholic intellectual tradition we embrace asserts that faith and reason complement each other, and at Loyola, questions of faith are encouraged and examined as intellectual inquiries. This approach encourages the cultivation of a community committed to an examined life of intellectual, social and spiritual discernment, as well as the understanding that leadership and service to the world are intimately connected. Loyola’s remarkable legacy of achievement serves to inspire greater goals and to set new expectations for the role we can play in today’s world, and I am privileged to be a member of this extraordinary community—a very strong university—as we assume the responsibilities and opportunities of a truly great one.
