| | | 2006-07 Team Summary The Loyola College Club Badminton team has just finished a very successful season in only its second year. In the team’s first year Elaine DeBuona took the initiative to start this team and had a solid group of people meeting twice a week. As she left for Ireland in the fall, Doug Alban and Nick Bagg took over the leadership positions of the team. With a successful Activities Fair campaign, our roster grew to almost thirty people, which did not include those from last year’s team that went abroad. New ideas were set into place including a ladder, which encourage players to ask for challenge matches so that they could move up in the rankings. Also in the fall, the team played its first ever dual match versus Towson University. The team learned a lot from this experience, while picking up a few wins along the way. The fall also saw our team enter its first ever collegiate team tournament held at Towson University. Team unity grew as a part of this as well as each player improving their skills and technique. The spring semester was a bit harder as practice cut into class time for a lot of players. We still had a strong core of a dozen players participating. With each practice, the players focused on a different part of their game and got better and better. Towards the end of the semester, Nick Bagg and Dave Villa entered the Red Cross Charity Tournament held at Loch Raven. They were able to play competitive matches against seasoned and nationally ranked players. This was another good learning experience and overall fun day. The following weekend, Nick Bagg and Doug Alban attended the College Park Collegiate tournament, each playing singles and doubles. This tournament was comprised of players from Towson, UMBC, College Park, Johns Hopkins, and George Washington. Both players played outstanding matches in singles and together as a doubles team. In his consolation match, Doug Alban lost a heart-breaker to a player from UMBC 26-24 in the third and decisive set. Finally, the team visited the Loch Raven Badminton Club for a friendly match. We brought nine players. The match was a success and fun was had by all. As the season has come to an end, Doug Alban and Nick Bagg pitched an idea to all Baltimore/D.C. schools to start an Intercollegiate League in Maryland. The schools are very excited to see this league formed. We are also looking forward to our abroad players returning and hoping we have a strong freshman contingent come in again just like we had this year. The team would like to thank Eric Eckenrode greatly for all of his help, support, and encouragement – Club Sports would not be the same with out him. One final reminder – AIM FOR THE OUTER NINTHS!! |
