2006-07 Team Summary

The Women's Club Lacrosse team at Loyola enjoyed an active year in 2006-2007.  The team held two tryouts during the academic year, ultimately capping the squad at 20 players for the spring season; with over 40 students trying out in the fall and an additional few in the spring, we can continue to expect a competitive and talented roster in the future.  So much of the energy and enthusiasm throughout the year came from our underclassmen, especially the new freshmen, as our team was led by only three seniors as well as a few juniors who departed for and returned from abroad.

In October, we played host to Towson and Villanova for a round robin, emerging victorious in both games.  A couple of weeks later we headed next door to Towson’s “Fall Back into Lax” tournament and saw action in a handful of games against the likes of Maryland, Penn State, and James Madison.  As a runner-up, we knew we had some things to accomplish come spring, but were confident we would hold our own against the teams in our league.

Upon returning to campus for the spring semester, we began practicing indoors for the rest of January and the month of February.  We were scheduled to face UMBC and George Mason at the end of February, but unfortunately the games were canceled due to an unexpected snow storm.  Also delaying games because of conflicting spring breaks amongst the teams in our league, our season did not get underway until the end of March, but we were extremely active in a short amount of time.  We were excited to host San Diego State when they came east for their spring break, our first game experience prior to playing in a shootout that weekend in Annapolis.  We felt privileged to play with some high-caliber teams in the U.S. Marine Corp Stadium; we lost a tough game against Pittsburgh but won against Villanova for the second time this year.  We finished out the remainder of the spring 4-2, with great wins against Salisbury, Towson, UMBC, and Howard County Community College.  The two losses were only 3-goal deficits each at Maryland and Georgetown, two of our toughest competitors in the past few years.  Without question we wish we had a winning season, but were pleased in our effort to go out at .500 as the season came to a close.

Navy leaves our league next year to play at the Division I level under the instruction of the winningest head coach in women’s lacrosse history, Cindy Timchal, which certainly speaks to the competition we have faced in our league over the last few years.  We did not travel to play any Virginia-area teams in our league this season, but we would like to express our sympathies to Virginia Tech; our hearts go out to their team and classmates in the wake of the tragic event at their university.

After our rebuilding season this year, working to find the chemistry on the field with so many new faces, we will definitely be a threat in the next few seasons to come.  We are sad to say goodbye to our senior goalie and defenders, Katie Lowman, Erin Gallagher, and Megan Dutch, who have been extremely dedicated to the success of the team and well-being of our teammates.  Loyola Women’s Club Lacrosse has been able to thrive under the leadership of students, which says a lot about the determination and values that each student brings to the team.  Upon returning to campus next fall, we will continue to work hard and perform our best to represent Loyola on and off the field.
