Loyola Launches Full-Time, One-Year MAT Program

Beginning in summer 2018, Loyola University Maryland will offer a new full-time, one-year Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT), leading to a master’s degree and initial teacher certification.

The MAT program offers a rich integration of traditional elementary and secondary education coursework requirements with studies in equity and social justice in education, particularly in urban school settings. Students enrolled in the full-time, one year program will take the same courses as the part-time program at an accelerated pace as a cohort.

Field experiences and internships will take place in schools in the Baltimore area.

“There is a need for strong teachers in the classroom, particularly in urban communities, and aspiring teachers, especially career changers and recent grads, are seeking to gain these skills as soon as possible to start their career as a highly sought-after, effective teacher,” said Afra Hersi, Ph.D., chair of the teacher education department. “We want to build up the supply of excellent teachers who are empowered to affect change in the lives of the students in their classrooms. The emphasis on urban education, and preparing teachers who are committed to equity, speaks directly to Loyola’s Jesuit social justice mission and ideals”.

Key components of the program:

• Elementary certification (grades 1-6) program requires 38-39 credits.
• Secondary certification (grades 7-12 or PK-12) program requires 34-35 credits.
• Secondary specialty areas include grades PK-12 in Art, Spanish, French, Music (vocal or instrumental) and grades 7-12 in Biology, Chemistry, Earth/Space Science, Physics, English, Mathematics, and Social Studies.
• Program completed in one year.
• Classes may be held the Evergreen campus in Baltimore or at the graduate center in Timonium.  

The priority application deadline for the summer 2018 semester is March 15. Scholarships are available to those who apply by February 15.
