Loyola University Maryland

Tracy Rone Lecture

School of Education Speaker Series

About the Speaker

Dr. Rone is a Research Associate at the Institute for Urban Research at Morgan State University. She earned a B.A. from Goucher College, a M.A. from the University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of California, Los Angeles. She is trained as a linguistic and cultural anthropologist and the study of issues related to the education of children and adolescents in home and community settings has been a focal point of her research.

Her research examines issues of language socialization and personal narrative as they inform beliefs about individual and group identity, achievement ideology, and offer insight into issues in urban education. She has also examined the effectiveness of experiential education in creating successful learning communities in undergraduate classrooms.

She is completing a book-length linguistic ethnography, Witnessing Success: Lessons in Academic and Life Success from an African American Community-based Youth Program, which examines how personal narrative socializes identity, morality, and achievement ideology.
