Graduate Study in School Counseling The graduate program in professional school counseling is designed to prepare a student for a career as a professional school counselor in an elementary and/or secondary school setting. Throughout the course of study, students will have the opportunity to develop sound theoretical foundations and effective techniques for guiding and counseling young people. The program is approved by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP), the Maryland State Department of Education and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. Although studies are intended to prepare students to become school counselors, various public and private agencies outside of school settings are interested in obtaining the services of professional counselors. Because this program is accredited by CACREP, students may take the National Counselor Examination (NCE) administered by the National Board for Certified Counselors during their last semester.
