The Sellinger Applied Portfolio Fund FAQ

Why is the SAP experience “only offered” in Timonium?  It is offered in Timonium on Monday nights in Room 54 so SAP Advisory Board Members and former students know where the class is meeting and can stop by if they wish.  Last year one Board member stopped by fairly often and added his insights to the investment process.  The concept of only in Timonium is to help build up an espirit de core so former students will stop by and add to the experience.  If someone has to wonder about the location, from city to classroom, or the night of the week they are less likely to stop by and engage in the class.  As several students and Board members have indicated “if the educational experience is worthwhile the location should not make a difference.”  The experience and education is definitely worthwhile – see testimonials and a report of the May 7, 2007 Advisory Board meeting.

Do class meetings occur in downtown Baltimore?  Yes, the class meetings where the students present to the SAP Advisory Board are held at either Legg Mason or T. Rowe Price offices in downtown Baltimore.  Moreover, based on suggestions from Board members and students we are exploring the possibility of having additional classes downtown – e.g., the third Monday of each month.  The benefit of having additional classes downtown is that some Advisory Board members, and other members of their firms (e.g., Legg Mason, T. Rowe Price, Deutsche Bank, et cetera) are more likely to stop by and partake in the class discussions.  Students who are in the course will have input on this decision.

Do both courses count towards graduation?  Yes, GB828 counts for a Special Topics in Finance: “Applied Research” GB825 course and GB829 (the second course in the SAP experience) counts for GB723 Portfolio Management.  If you have any questions about your program and how things would work please contact the Graduate Programs Office and speak to one of the advisors.

Can I take GB828 in the Spring, graduate, and then take GB829 in the Fall?  Yes it is possible, however be sure to speak to one of the advisors in the Graduate Programs Office.

Is it true that Bill Miller showed up for a class last year?  Yes, from the report of the last class in the 2006-2007 academic year.  The SAP course held their final class on Monday, 7 May, and presented their performance to the SAP Board of Advisors.  The SAP Fund out performed the S&P 500 during the academic year with a return of 12.58%.  A special treat for all involved were the special guests that showed up for the class and were colleagues of current board member, Mary Chris Gay from Legg Mason Capital Management (LMCM). The Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of LMCM, Bill Miller and their Chief Investment Strategist, Michael Mauboussin added depth and insight to the class and provided invaluable feedback to the students.  As several students said after the class “receiving their feedback was like an explanation point to a fantastic experience.”

I heard the class is a lot of work, is that true?  Yes the class does require commitment and work.  In fact that is one of the reasons why both courses are now three credits instead of two credits.  There is adequate academic content to have the SAP experience count for two courses towards graduation.  If you want a fantastic experience and education plus a meaningful line to add to your resume you should apply for the SAP experience!

What are the prerequisites for the course?  The prerequisite for GB828, the first course in the SAP experience, is GB722 Investments Management.  Applications from MBAs concentrating in Finance and MSF students are welcomed.  The prerequisite for the the second course GB829 is the first course GB828.

Why do I have to apply and not just register?  The enrollment is limited because it would not be practical to manage a portion of Loyola’s endowment with a class size of, say, 30 students.  The likelihood of developing consensus for an investment would be minimal.

If you have any other questions do not hesitate to contact Professor Reinhart 410.617.1555 or the Graduate Programs Office and speak to one of the advisors.  The Finance Department looks forward to receiving your application.
