Sellinger School to honor John Halamka as Lattanze Center CIO of the Year

Loyola University Maryland’s Sellinger School of Business and Management will honor John D. Halamka, M.D., one of the healthcare industry’s leaders in information technology, as the David D. Lattanze Center for Information Value CIO of the Year on April 8. The program includes an award ceremony and cocktail reception from 4:45 – 7 p.m. at Loyola’s Timonium Graduate Center. Halamka will meet with undergraduate and graduate students, as well as information technology professionals, for roundtable discussions during the day and will also give an address, “Connecting Patients, Providers, and Payers,” at 5 p.m. prior to the presentation of his award (see a video of his presentation).
“Dr. Halamka is an exceptional IT professional who has played a critical role in the information technology strategies of many prominent organizations,” said Karyl Leggio, Ph.D., dean of Loyola’s Sellinger School. “Several of our Executive MBA case studies closely examine his work and its impact. Given the central role the healthcare industry plays in today’s business world, we believe Dr. Halamka is the clear choice for our 2010 CIO of the Year.”
Halamka is a practicing emergency physician and chief information officer of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, responsible for all clinical, financial, administrative, and academic information technology serving 3,000 doctors, 14,000 employees and two million patients; chief information officer of Harvard Medical School, where he oversees all educational, research, and administrative computing for 18,000 faculty and 3,000 students; chairman of the New England Healthcare Exchange Network (NEHEN), where he oversees clinical and administrative data exchange in Massachusetts; and chair of the U.S. Healthcare Information Technology (HIT) Standards Panel and co-chair of the Standards Committee, where he coordinates the process of electronic standards harmonization among stakeholders nationwide.
Established in 1991, the Lattanze Center CIO of the Year is a national award recognizing leaders advancing the strategic application of information technology to achieve organizational objectives. The nominating committee consists of senior information technology leaders and business professors in the Baltimore area. Previous recipients have included LaVerne Council, corporate vice president and chief information officer, Johnson & Johnson; David Barnes, senior vice president and chief information officer, United Parcel Services; and Charles Geshke, chairman of the board and co-founder, Adobe Systems.
The Lattanze Center, a nationally recognized center of excellence for issues related to information technology, was formed in 1987 in memory of David D. Lattanze, EMBA ’82, by a gift from his widow, Julie Lattanze. Prior to his death, Lattanze, who spent his entire career in the information technology industry, sought to create an educational forum where the information technology business community could gather and exchange problems, ideas, and other subjects of interest. The resulting partnership—the Lattanze Center—between the information technology community and Loyola’s Sellinger School of Business and Management offers executive education on planning, building, and managing information technology systems for enterprise success and to facilitate information sharing among information technology executives, academics, and students.
