February 21, 2012
Gerard Athaide, Ph.D., department chair and professor of marketing at Loyola University Maryland’s Sellinger School of Business and Management, has been named one of the world’s top-50 innovation management scholars by The Journal of Product Innovation Management, a leading academic journal devoted to the latest research, theory, and practice in new product and service development.
Athaide came in tied for No. 25 and was also named a top scholar in two categories the journal identified as “hot topics and future research directions:” ‘Product factors – Fit with market need/Meet customer needs’ and ‘Organizational factors – External relations.’ The journal ranked Loyola tied for 63rd best in innovation management out of more than 600 schools worldwide on the list.
“I am thrilled that Dr. Athaide and the Sellinger School have been recognized by such a prestigious publication for achievements that reflect our desire and ambition to see business differently,” said Karyl B. Leggio, Ph.D., dean of the Sellinger School. “Our commitment to and achievements in innovation management and its study are clear indications of the value and quality of education we offer students who thrive in a rigorous academic environment.”
Innovation management helps bring new ideas to reality, and these rankings reflect the volume of original contributions to the field. The rankings for individual scholars are based on the number of articles each scholar published in two leading academic innovation management journals and eight top management and marketing journals over the last 20 years. For universities, the rankings are determined by the number of articles published by current faculty in the same journals over the same period of time.
Athaide has taught new product development and innovation management at Loyola since 1992 and currently teaches courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. He earned his Ph.D. and MBA from Syracuse University and has an MMS and a B.Sc. from the University of Bombay. He is a member of the American Marketing Association and the Product Development and Management Association, which publishes The Journal of Product Innovation Management.
