Fr. Bryon to deliver Provincial’s Lecture on keeping faith through a crisis

The Reverend William Byron, S.J., will deliver the 2005 Spring Provincial’s Lecture, titled “Reflections On How the Church is Working its Way Through the Sex Abuse Crisis,” on Wednesday, April 27, at 7:30 p.m. in McGuire Hall. More than two years after the sex abuse crisis in the Church, Catholics are still struggling to make sense of it all, and Father Byron will present ideas he hopes might “lift the sights, minds and hearts of a wounded Church.”

Held twice a year, the Provincial’s Lecture brings renowned Jesuits to speak at various locations within the Maryland Province. It is sponsored by The Reverend Timothy Brown, S.J., provincial of the Maryland Province Jesuits, and founder of Loyola’s Center for Values and Service.

A research professor at the Sellinger School of Business and Management, Fr. Byron served as interim president of Loyola University, in New Orleans, from 2003 to 2004.  Before that, he was pastor of Holy Trinity Church in Washington, DC. From 1992 until 2000, Fr. Byron taught in the business school at Georgetown University, where he held an appointment as Distinguished Professor of the Practice of Ethics. Other positions he has held include president of The Catholic University of America, president of the University of Scranton and dean of arts and sciences at Loyola University, New Orleans.

Fr. Byron writes a syndicated column for the Catholic News Service and has authored numerous books, including Quadrangle Considerations, which won the Catholic Press Association’s 1990 Best Book Award in Education, and Answers from Within: Spiritual Guidelines for Managing Setbacks in Work and Life.
