Spotlight
Andrea Giampetro-Meyer likes to facilitate change. Whether through teaching, serving as department chair, or conducting award-winning research, she enjoys having the opportunity to impact things in a positive way.

“This is a great time to be a faculty member at Loyola,” she says. “It’s exciting to help the college become the best it can be.”

She works toward this goal in myriad ways, including mentoring junior faculty women of color across disciplines and helping to ensure that the institution’s practice of hiring minority faculty members continues to strengthen and broaden. Because her research focuses on diversity issues in the workplace, her experiences are especially applicable to these efforts.

Giampetro-Meyer finds value in teaching throughout Loyola’s MBA offerings, from evening classes to the Executive MBA programs, and connects with business professionals at various levels of their careers. As a result, she is able to offer insights up and down the corporate ladder.

“I get an understanding from my evening students about what they find particularly confusing or frustrating about their senior managers and can then share this information with students in the Executive programs,” she explains. “I like to feel that I’m helping to bridge the gap so the groups can gain perspective about each other.”

Gaining perspective is something Giampetro-Meyer values and believes Loyola faculty are particularly good at helping to impart. Their expertise in relating theory to real-world situations encourages students to develop opinions based on a depth of understanding and true knowledge.

“Having a solid grounding in academic theory is valuable,” she says. “You can attend a workshop or a seminar to get a cursory appreciation of a topic; but studying the theory behind the topic allows for a deeper, more relevant understanding.”
