Education: M.B.A. (Finance) – Loyola College in Maryland B.S. – University of Maryland College Park Professionally Speaking: "It was rewarding to take classes with professionals who were close to my age and experiencing the same things I was." Personally Speaking: "I learned that it is okay to prioritize; that dealing with life and school and resource constraints mirrors very closely what goes on in the workplace every day." Spotlight Alumnus Tom Shock takes the notion of efficiently getting from one place to another very seriously. In fact, his new business, Your Traffic Angel, was created to reduce the time people spend commuting and decrease the stress they feel while doing so. It is no surprise that he counts Loyola’s three convenient locations among the highlights of the MBA program. “When you are traveling from work or home to class, the location can make or break your night,” he says. “Loyola’s facilities are in convenient locations with a wide array of courses offered at each. My energies were spent on coursework, not on getting there and trying to find parking.” Along with location, Shock selected Loyola because the MBA program is accredited and offers classes that build on solid foundations to explore the most current business topics. With faculty who actively participate in their specific industries and an extensive alumni network, the program provides real-world access to the local business community. Shock originally began his graduate studies to ensure that he would be prepared for his next step up the corporate ladder. He didn’t suspect that he’d be applying his knowledge to start his own business. Nonetheless, he felt fully prepared when the time came. “Loyola gave me the confidence and experience to start my own business,” he says. “I had a good background from my earlier positions but my MBA classes filled in the missing pieces and acted as a sort of security blanket when I went out on my own.”
