Michael Burton
has been a member of the Loyola Sociology
Department since 1978, and has served two terms as its Chair
(1982-86 & 1989-92). A native Texan, he received his
undergraduate degree in sociology from the University of
Houston and his MA and Ph.D. degrees sociology from the
University of Texas at Austin. Courses he regularly teaches
include: "Self and Society," "Societies and Institutions,"
"American Society," "Protest! Legacies of the Sixties,"
"Social Inequality," and "Global Sociology." Burton's main
research interests are in the broad area of political
sociology, and more specifically in national elites and the
foundations of political stability and democracy. He has
published a number of book chapters as well as articles in
the American Sociological Review, Sociological
Quarterly, Journal of Political and Military Sociology,
International Politics and Government and Opposition.
