Dr. Ryu has been teaching since 1970 and at Loyola College since 1976, where he has been a full professor since 1984. He also served as Department Chairman at Loyola from 1976 to 1982 and 1986 to 1989. His areas for teaching and research have been sociological theory, demography, mass communication, race/ethnic relations, and urban sociology. In 1982, Dr. Ryu received Loyola College's first Fulbright-Hays Award and taught at Seoul National University, his alma matter.

Since 1988, Dr. Ryu has also been serving as a Part-time Special Assistant to the Mayor Schmoke of Baltimore and served as the 1990 Census Coordinator for Baltimore City and as the Mayor's liaison to the Korean-American community of Greater Baltimore.

Dr. Ryu has authored a book entitled, Residential Segregation of Blacks in Metropolitan America, 1983; over 15 articles in scholarly journals and book chapter and over 30 articles in newspapers/magazines; and has given numerous presentations at conventions.

In addition to his scholarly activities, Dr. Ryu has been actively involved in civic affairs. As a result his activities and accomplishments, he has received citations/certificates from U.S. Senators, Maryland Governor, Director of the Census Bureau, Baltimore City Mayor, Maryland State Legislature, Baltimore County Executive, Baltimore Police Department, Korean Society of Baltimore, and Korean Students Association. Other civic involvements to date include: a trustee, Baltimore City Life Museums; member, Maryland Humanities Council; Chairman, Asian Advisory Committee to Baltimore County School Superintendent; member, Channel-2 TV Advisory Board; and advisory position for 10+ ethnic organizations in Baltimore-Washington Area and Federation of Korean Associations-USA.; numerous appearances in area newspapers/magazines/radio/TV of Baltimore area. He is 1991 graduate of the Leadership Program of the Greater Baltimore Committee.
