Combined B.A./B.S. - MAT, Secondary: Certification in Grades 7-12
Loyola University Maryland undergraduate students who wish to be certified to teach at the middle or high school level may participate in a five-year program resulting in bachelor's degree within their area of major and Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT). This program has been designed with dual goals of achieving teacher certification and a master's degree quickly. With certification reciprocity across the U.S., the MAT program has been approved by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).
Students in the program can choose to become certified at the secondary level (grades 7-12) in:

- Mathematics
- Social studies
- Spanish
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Earth/space science
- Physics

Who is the Program For?
- Loyola's combined B.A./B.S.-MAT program is open to aspiring teachers who desire certification in Secondary Education (Grades 7 - 12).
- Loyola University Maryland undergraduate students should have a major (or sufficient credits - 27-30) in English, Spanish, mathematics, biology, chemistry, Earth/space science, physics, or social studies. Social studies includes economics, history, philosophy, political science, psychology, and sociology.
Program Requirements
Loyola's combined B.A./B.S.-MAT program is grounded in the guiding tenets of Loyola's education department: competence, conscience, and compassion and is influenced by the Jesuit educational philosophy, which emphasizes academic excellence, reflective practice, and social justice in education. This program offers a course of studies that is designed to prepare exceptionally qualified teachers who are responsive to the educational needs of diverse learners.
Students will use the content knowledge learned at the undergraduate level as a foundation for exploring educational pedagogy.
Program participants will work to achieve their goals in a nurturing and learner-centered environment. Most classes are offered in the late afternoon and early evening to balance various schedules. Student teaching requirements are fulfilled in a Professional Development School (PDS).

*Includes two required 20-hour field placements which are deisigned to provide the student with exposure to school classroom operations prior to the internship.
**Internship I occurs in fall semester of the graduate program and Internship II and Seminar take place during the spring semester of the graduate program.
***This course can be waived through exam or prior coursework.
