Dr. Bernard A. Saltysiak Memorial Endowment Fund Description: Established in memory of Bernard A. Saltysiak, O.D. (behavioral optometrist), Loyola Class of 1947 (B.S. Latin), by his widow, Mrs. Elaine B. Saltysiak-Brickett, a speech-language pathologist and longtime member of the Mount St. Agnes faculty. Dr. Saltysiak was a very active alumnus, serving as an Evergreen Fund volunteer and on the Reitz Arena Fund Committee for the Decade of Decision Capital Campaign. He died July 1, 1990. Selection: By the Speech-Language Pathology/Audiology department on the basis of academic strength and interest in developing clinical skills. The scholarship is to a Loyola College undergraduate senior who plans to continue his or her education in speech-language pathology in the Loyola College graduate program. The recipient is expected to spend at least 15 hours observing and assisting with visual training therapy in the office of Timothy Madgar, O.D. (or in an optometric or clinic approved by Elaine Saltysiak-Brickett). The purpose is to insure awareness of the relationship between functional visual and the development of language skills - the area in which Dr. Bernard Saltysiak did most of his research. Application Procedure: A student must meet the selection criteria. Once a student is accepted into the graduate program, he or she will be invited to apply for the scholarship by completing an essay detailing reasons of interest in this area of study. Final decisions will be made once a student has secured, via deposit, his or her intent to attend the Loyola College graduate program in Speech-Language Pathology. All documentation should be sent to Dr. Lisa Schoenbrodt.
