Select from the following to find out more: Students Faculty Administration/Staff There are many ways students can get involved throughout the year - either through the semester-long programs, becoming enrolled in service learning courses, or club sponsored programs. Additionally, there is always the opportunity to start a new program, workshop, or one-time event. Just contact Amy Maher, who can work with you to bring your idea to life! (Word doc) Semester-Long Programs: Spring 2009 Teaching assistant Loyola students act as great aides in the classrooms! Teachers love enjoying an extra pair of hands and eyes and Loyola students come to adore working in the classroom with the children. In addition to working in the classrooms, the teacher assistants may also have the opportunity to work on material with students one on one or in small groups. Days and times available are: Two or three hour time slots- any weekday morning from 8 - 11 a.m. or in the afternoon between 1 - 3 p.m. - Homework Help Program
This opportunity allows Loyola students the chance to work closely with St. Mary's students once a week (or more) on his/her homework after school. This is the largest and most popular program. Days and times available are: Tuesdays, Wednesdays and/or Thursdays from 2:45 - 4:15 p.m. - Athletic Club
This program is structured like an after school Physical Education session open to grades 6 - 8. Loyola students participating will bring over equipment to St. Mary's and play a variety of sports and games. Athletic and/or interest clubs are also encouraged to sign up and plan an activity for the kids! Note this program will run through the end of October only. Day and time available: TBA from 2:45 - 4:15 p.m. Math Tutoring Volunteers with work specificially with sixth graders on math assignments after school. Tutors will give one on one attention to students needing additional support in Math. Day and time available: TBA from 2:45-4:15 p.m.
Service Learning or Club-Sponsored Programs: - Book Worms
The Loyola College Literary Society sponsors Book Worms, a club that works with grades 3 - 6 to encourage reading through thoughtful lesson plans that uses books to inspire crafts, acting and other ways of expressing the literature. You do not have to be in LoCoLitSo to participate - this opportunity is open to all Loyola students. Day and time available: TBA from 2:45 - 4:15 p.m. - Photography Club
Enroll in Dan Schlapbach's Service-Learning course in spring 2009 to be a part of the Photography Enrichment Program. Day and time available: TBA from 2:45 - 4:15 p.m. (subject to change)
For all programs listed above, an orientation is required and is completed on site at St. Mary's prior to starting the volunteer experience. In addition, STAND training required by the Archdiocese must also be executed. Read Information for New Volunteers (word doc) and please do not hesitate to contact Amy Maher for more information about any of the programs listed. Additionally, new ideas are more than welcome! Faculty are encouraged to motivate their students to volunteer for the Loyola Homework Help Program or Teaching Assistant opportunities, or to develop learning opportunities for St. Mary's students related to their own course material, such as computer workshops or art projects. Faculty can also create service-learning courses through the Center for Community Service and Justice that incorporate service options at St. Mary's.
