Preparing Tomorrow Capital Campaign Exceeds $90 Million

Preparing Tomorrow

Preparing Tomorrow, the most ambitious fundraising effort in Loyola College’s history, topped $91 million—a new campaign milestone—in early December. While this figure far surpasses the initiative’s original $80 million goal, which was reached in April, continued momentum is fueling ongoing efforts to fully fund specific campaign priorities, including the Intercollegiate Athletic Complex (IAC) and the renovation and expansion of the Loyola/Notre Dame Library.

"On behalf of the entire Loyola Community, I am so grateful to our fundraising partners," says College President Brian Linnane, S.J. "As a result of their great generosity, many items in the campaign's agenda of needs - most notably scholarship support and academic areas of excellence - have surpassed their funding goals, and other campaign priorities have received significant funding. Building on the momentum of this successful campaign, we continue to seek full funding for ongoing projects, including the IAC, the Library and other priorities."

Since the campaign's launch five years ago, it has drawn on the support of a wide variety of friends of the College. In the initiative’s earliest phases, this support stemmed largely from Trustees, leading corporations and foundations. More recently, alumni, parents and members of the Campus Community have played larger roles in the campaign’s progress.  Highlights from various areas of the campaign include:

Alumni Campaign

  • As of November 30, 2007, the Alumni Campaign has raised more than $2.7 million in gifts up to $100,000.
  • Overall Alumni support for the campaign has exceeded $21 million.
  • Alumni regional campaigns in New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. generated a number of significant gifts to the campaign, as well as campaigns in regions with strong geographical concentrations of alumni, including Florida, Atlanta, Delaware and Massachusetts.
  • The Alumni Campaign has been the largest volunteer effort in College history.
  • In honor of their 40 year reunion, the Class of 1968 has embarked on their own goal to raise $750,000 for the campaign.  Currently they have raised $430,000.

Alumni Campaign leaders continue their fundraising efforts, rallying fellow alumni support to fully fund the campaign's remaining priorities.

Parent Campaign

The parent division has also shown tremendous support of Preparing Tomorrow.

  • As of November 30, 2007, the Parent Campaign has raised more than $1.25 million
  • A series of regional receptions has afforded parents an opportunity to meet and discuss the campaign with College staff and College President Rev. Brian F. Linnane, S.J., and resulted in several significant gifts to the campaign.

Campus Campaign
The strong support of alumni and parents was bolstered by that of the Campus Community, which continues to make contributions in support of We Are Loyola, the Campus Campaign for Preparing Tomorrow.

  • The ongoing campaign has raised more than $400,000 on the strength of commitments from more than 390 members of the faculty, administration and staff.
  • 40 percent of those who have contributed to We Are Loyola have given at a leadership level of $1,000.
  • The Campus Community has embraced the Expansion and Renovation of the Loyola/Notre Dame Library as the focus of its campaign.

Corporations and Foundations

Loyola’s Corporate and Foundation partners have been significant participants in the Preparing Tomorrow campaign since its first days, and their overall support of over $19 million has helped the campaign to exceed its goals.

  • The Baltimore corporate community has demonstrated its steadfast commitment to partnering with Loyola by contributing more than $16 million to Loyola's highest priorities such as the Sellinger School of Business, the Loyola/ Notre Dame Library, and the Loyola Clinical Centers.
  • Various local and national foundations have supported Loyola’s priorities with six-and seven-figure gifts and have contributed more than $3 million overall.
  • As part of that $3 million in foundation contributions, Loyola received a $1 million grant from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation to establish the Loyola College Advising Corps, an initiative that seeks to help more Maryland students attend college or other postsecondary training.

Trustee and Leadership Giving

Since its inception, Preparing Tomorrow has received strong leadership support.  Trustee Chair H. Edward Hanway, '74, and immediate past Trustee Chair John R. Cochran, '73, have served as co-chairs of the Preparing Tomorrow campaign since 2003. Their leadership and support have proven instrumental in its success.

  • Trustee support exceeded $10 million, including several high six-and seven-figure gifts.
  • Total leadership giving, which is described as gifts over $250,000, exceeded $21.9 million, including several six and seven-figure gifts.
  • The largest individual gift was for $7 million.

The largest fundraising effort in College history, Preparing Tomorrow joins a long tradition of successful development initiatives, most notably the Renewing the Promise campaign of the mid-1990s, which raised $43 million.
