Wednesday, December 4, 1996 -- The Loyola College Men's Swimming and Diving Team cruised to a 114-89 victory over Virginia Military Institute. The Greyhounds dominated, winning all but two events. This marks Loyola's second straight convincing victory over VMI in a rivalry which has been known for close meets.
Junior Mark Gallagher led the way with three victories. He won the 50 meter freestyle and went 1-2 with Freshman John Moore in the 100 meter freestyle. He then anchored Ken Sposato, Dave Raver, and Vin Massey in the men's 200 meter freestyle relay. This team set a new school record with a time of 1 minute, 39.85 seconds. Massey and Raver took first and second place honors respectively in the 200 meter freestyle. Later, Raver won the 400 meter freestyle. Moore won the 800 meter freestyle.
Other first place performances came from Junior Jon Lang, who took the 200 meter individual medley. In the opening event of the meet, the team of Ashley Loper, Ryan Davis, Sposato, and Lang won the 200 meter medley relay. In diving, Junior Will Bryant won the one meter competition and classmate John Gunther took the three meter event.
