The Loyola College swimming and diving teams have enjoyed tremendous success both in and out of the pool. Greyhound swimmers are among the most accomplished student-athletes on the Evergreen Campus in terms of academic success, athletic achievement, and involvement in the college community.
Loyola's swimming and diving program was well represented last year on both the college's Academic Honor Roll as well as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference All-Academic Team. Twenty Greyhound swimmers and divers, more than from any of the college's other 12 varsity teams, earned spots on the Loyola Academic Honor Roll last spring. The Academic Honor Roll recognizes all student-athletes who recorded a grade-point average of 3.0 or better for a particular semester. In addition, 10 of those studen athletes were named to the 1996 Academic All-MAAC Team, which honors Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference student-athletes who are at least sophomores and have maintained cumulative GPAs of 3.2 or better while contributing significantly to their teams.
More than just individually, however, the Loyola swimming and diving teams have earned a national reputation or their efforts in the classroom. Both squads earned recognition from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America for ranking among the nation's elite in terms of academic performance. The men compiled a team GPA of 3.06, which was 15th in the country, while the women ranked 28th with a composite GPA of 3.14.
Close to home, the Loyola swimmers and divers also have had a profound impact on campus life. At last spring's annual Greyhound Athletic Awards Banquet, several members of the swimming and diving team were honored with some of the college's prestigious awards.
Chris Evans, a 1996 graduate, received the John R. Mohler Award, which is presented annually by the Loyola College Alumni Association to a senior male student-athlete who has excelled in the areas of athletics, scolarship, and character. Given in memory of John R. Mohler, class of 1950, the award-winner is chosen by the male student athletes of Loyola.
Another 1996 graduate, Eilish Cahalan, received the Ernest Lagna Award, which is presented to a senior female athlete who has achieved a strong academic standing as well as significant athletic accomplishments. The winner must also have made valuable contrabutions to the campus community. Cahalan was chosen by the female student-athletes of Loyola.
Current Greyhound swimmer Jamie Bifulco won the Loyola Unsung Hero Award as well as the Greyhound Club Scholarship, indicative of academic and athletic excellence.
