Career Mentoring and Shadowing Program

The Career Mentoring and Shadowing Program is an opportunity for Loyola students to obtain career development guidance from a successful professional. You have the opportunity to meet with a Career Advisor and be referred to a Mentor who is an appropriate match for your occupational interests. It will be up to you to arrange an informational interview either by phone or in person, depending upon the Mentor's availability. Informational questions you might ask include:

How did you become interested in this field?
What courses, internships, work activities, or other experience led you to this field?
What advice can you offer a college student?
How did you get started?
What is the salary range for people entering this field?

Once you have conducted the informational interview, possible mentoring activities might include:

Shadow your mentor at their place of work. This may be done during the Fall or Spring semesters or over breaks.
Meet your mentor's colleagues.
Accompany your mentor to a professional meeting.

Loyola Alumni from across the country and local professionals from a variety of career fields have agreed to participate in the program. Mentoring is a great way to broaden your perspective, network, and set career goals. If you have any questions or would like more information about the program, please contact Jen Lampton in The Career Center at 410-617-2331 or jglampton@loyola.edu.

Steps to Applying

1.  Complete the registration form to be matched with a mentor. Register online, stop by The Career Center, or email Jen Lampton for a copy of the form. Spaces are limited, so the earlier you register the better!

2. Once your registration has been received, you will be registered with the Career Mentoring Program Blackboard Organization.

2.  Visit the Blackboard Organization to review mentor resumes, biographies and contact information.

3.  Decide who you would like to be matched with and contact Jen Lampton with your preference(s). You may submit up to 3 mentor names in order of preference.

4.  Your mentor choices will be contacted on your behalf in order of preference.

5.  You will be notified via email whether or not you have been matched for a mentoring/shadowing opportunity. You will also be given additional information on shadowing and informational interviewing at this time.

6.  Once you have been matched, contact your mentor to coordinate an informational interview to be conducted via phone or in person.

7.  It is then up to you and your mentor to determine future mentoring activities such as shadowing for a day or two during the semester or over breaks.

Please Keep in Mind…

Mentoring is a learning experience, rather than the chance to ask for a job or internship.

Alumni from all across the country have been asked to participate. However, participation is voluntary on the alum's part.

It is up to you to follow through with your mentor.

Do your homework. Read related materials on your mentor and their organization.

Don’t forget to thank your mentor!
