As the intellects of the Catholic Church, it’s only fitting that the Jesuits were founded in an educational setting. The University of Paris, to be specific. The day was Aug. 15, 1534, and Ignatius of Loyola, along with six fellow students, founded the order of the Society of Jesus. The Jesuits made it their mission to impart cura personalis—or care of the whole person: mind, body, and spirit. During the centuries that have followed, Jesuits have become synonymous with higher education as a result of their extensive work as teachers, researchers, and world travelers—actively searching for knowledge through their broad life experiences. All in preparation to better serve humanity. Their purpose-driven order set high standards of academic excellence, service, community building, appreciation for other cultures, and the ability to see God in all things. The same high standards upon which St. Ignatius built the Jesuit order are the hallmarks of the institution that bears his name—Loyola University Maryland.

The core curriculum at Loyola is an engaging course of study that will offer rigor and challenge to your students who are intellectually curious. But it’s more than that. It’s the foundation for a rich and meaningful life. In the core, your students will be exposed to critical knowledge in a wide variety of subjects including math, philosophy, ethics, art, and theology. Some they’ll be familiar with, while others will be completely new to them. By studying the core, they’ll develop lifelong habits of curiosity, honesty, persistence, and a passion for the pursuit of knowledge.
