Swimmer Phil Scholz, ’11, wrapped up a five-event program at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing with a new American record in the 50-meter butterfly. Scholz, who is blind, earned places in the finals of the 100-meter butterfly and 400-meter freestyle, but did not medal in either race. However, he did set a new American record of 32.17 seconds in the first half of the 100-meter butterfly, a time that represents the 15th American record of his career, which began less than a year ago when the German-born Scholz earned his U.S. citizenship. “The whole experience went above and beyond anything I could have imagined,” says Scholz. “I would not trade it for the world.” Back in the States, Scholz participated in the Oct. 4 Parade of Gold honoring Maryland’s Olympians and Paralympians, a group that includes eight-time gold medal winning swimmer Michael Phelps and Katie Hoff, winner of a silver and two bronze medals in Beijing and a new volunteer assistant coach on the Hounds Swimming and Diving team. |
