Men's Swimming and Diving, Women's Crew and Men's Golf capture MAAC titles Three Greyhound teams, men's swimming and diving, women's crew and men's golf, captured their respective conference championship titles this semester. The Loyola men's swimming and diving team claimed the 2009 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship in February at Loyola’s Mangione Aquatic Center. Captains E.J. Verrico and Matthew Shaw, both seniors, accepted the MAAC trophy on behalf of the men's team along with Head Coach Brian Loeffler and Assistant Coaches Liz Chlebda and Jayme Adams. Loyola racked up a total of 843.50 points. Rider University followed with 762 points and Marist College came in third with 625 points. The Greyhounds finished the 2009 Championships with eight first place wins, seven MAAC records and one pool record in the 800 meter freestyle relay. That record bested one set in 2003 by a relay team including Olympian Michael Phelps. Women's crew emerged victorious at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship meet in April. "This is a great win for us and I couldn't be happier for our kids," said Head Coach Al Ramirez, who was also voted MAAC Coach of the Year by his colleagues in the league. "We really rowed exceptionally all day, and to take home the MAAC title means a lot to our team and to our program." The Greyhound women took home their third conference trophy with 174 points, edging Marist University (170 points) and followed by Fairfield University (154), Iona College (131), Sacred Heart University (107) and Manhattan College (15). The team earned wins in the Women's Pair, Novice 4, Lightweight 4, Junior Varsity 4 and Varsity 4. They finished second in the Varsity 8 and the Novice 8. Most recently, the men's gold team brought home the MAAC title at Kissimee, Fla.'s Celebration Golf Course on April 26. Four Greyhounds finished in the Top 15 to lead Loyola to its second straight conference championships, where they edged Siena by five strokes under the leadership of senior Mike Mulieri, who earned top individual honors via a playoff. The Greyhounds fired a 304 in the final round to finish with a cumulative 907 for the 54-hole event. Siena College finished five strokes back and Iona 11. Mulieri carded an 81 in Sunday's finale after going 71-71 in the first two rounds. He finished the tournament at 7 over par to finish tied with Canisius' Drew Creighton. The two advanced to a playoff, with Mulieri winning on the tenth hole by sinking a 6-foot par to win the McLeod Award, presented to the MAAC individual champion. Following the tournament, Loyola Head Coach Tom Beidleman was named MAAC Coach of the Year and freshman Jay Mulieri Rookie of the Year. It was Beidleman's first such honor since the 2003 season. The win gave the Greyhounds their second consecutive conference title and fifth in the last seven seasons under their head coach.
