Students Win Writing Awards:
Congratulations to Remi Formal, First Prize winner of the First Year Writing Award, Leigh Stambaugh, who won Second Prize, and Allison Iudica, Third Prize winner. Jacob Goodwin, Paul LaPlante, and Alexandra Scholldorf won Honorable Mentions.

Winners of Achievement Awards Announced:
Congratulations to Daniel Corrigan (09), who won the Junior Achievement in Writing, and Natasha Hochlowski (10), who won the Sophomore Achievement in Writing. The Award recipients are chosen for academic excellence and demonstration of leadership and service within the department.

Anthology on Women in the Military Chooses Loyola Student's Work: Jane Satterfield worked with Cameron Beattie ('09) on an essay for a military women's anthology entitled Powder: Writing by Women in the Ranks from Vietnam to Iraq. Art of the Argument Class contributes videos:
Professor Andrea Leary's Art of the Argument class completed a service-learning component last semester. One of the projects was making YouTube videos that advocated for people with developmental disabilities. A number of the videos are now on EndtheWaitNow.com as part of the Developmental Disabilities Coalition's campaign to increase support awareness from the Maryland State government.

Undergraduate Student Research and Scholarship Colloquium: The Writing Department was well represented at the Ninth Annual Undergraduate Student Research and Scholarship Colloquium sponsored by the Undergraduate Student Research Committee on April 4, 2008.  This annual campus-wide forum highlights undergraduate student research and scholarship. The goal of the colloquium is to encourage scholastic endeavors that focus on either the generation of new knowledge or creative integration of existing scholarship.

In the Arts and Humanities Oral Demonstration and Performance session, Matthew Rooney ('08) won first place for "Transforming and Performing 'The Waste Land'" (Karen Madison, mentor), and Raina Fields ('08) tied for second place with her poetry reading and presentation, "I Am A Poet" (Jane Satterfield, mentor). 

In the Arts and Humanities Oral session, Lorraine Cuddeback ('08) won second place for her literacy study, "Prometheus' Torch" (Cinthia Gannett, mentor).

Each year, the Dean of First-Year Students recognizes Promising First-Year Scholars at the Colloquium. Paul LaPlante ('11) was awarded a Promising First-Year Scholar Award for his essay "'The Real Thing'"? (Ned Balbo, mentor).
