Year of the City begins with Mass of the Holy Spirit, Street fair

Registration and essential information

Loyola College’s Year of the City initiative kicks off Sunday, Sept. 10, with a special celebration of the Mass of the Holy Spirit at the second site of the College’s campus in downtown Baltimore, followed by a street fair for the College Community and various community organizations.

“As we begin this year of examining the treasures and the tribulations of urban America and Loyola’s role and responsibilities toward its neighbors, we return to our historic beginnings in Baltimore, and symbolically renew our commitment to this community,” said College President Brian F. Linnane, S.J.

The Mass of the Holy Spirit is one of Jesuit education’s oldest traditions, and will be celebrated this year at St. Ignatius Church on Calvert Street, adjacent to St. Ignatius Loyola Academy and CENTERSTAGE, site of the campus Loyola occupied from 1855-1921.

St. Ignatius Loyola Academy students and their families, representatives of local Jesuit ministries, partners from the St. Mary of the Assumption Elementary School, and neighbors from the St. Frances Academy and Community Center, will join the Loyola Community at a street fair following the Mass. The fair will feature festival food, face painting, carnival games and caricature artists as well as music from rock band Florez, Poly-Western High School’s Marching Flock, and swing and jazz ensembles. Tours of CENTERSTAGE and presentations about Jesuit ministries in Baltimore will also be available.

Announced by Fr. Linnane in his October 2005 Inaugural Address, the Year of the City initiative is a celebration of the strengths of the City of Baltimore and a renewal of the College’s commitment to its neighbors in the city.
