P.A. Miller lecture to look at the city through the lens of Roman elegy and satire On November 20th, the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures plays proud host to Dr. P.A. Miller, who will give a lecture entitled “‘I Get Around’: Sadism, Desire and Metonymy on the Streets of Rome with Horace and David.” Dr. Miller is the Director of the Comparative Literature program at the University of South Carolina and a scholar of ancient Greek poetry and nineteenth century French poetry and literature. His lecture will focus on the ways that Roman elegy and satire portray the city and the action of navigating the city. The lecture, which is sponsored by the department’s Comparative Cultures and Literary Studies program, is part of a series of lectures that examines what living in a city means in different literary and historical contexts. The Monday lecture will take place at 4:00 pm in the Fourth Floor Programming Room of the Andrew White Student Center. |
