Mission: Mobtown explores Fell's Point Nov. 4

A group of Loyola College students will take to the streets of Fells Point on Saturday, Nov. 4 as part of Mission: Mobtown, a monthly event that encourages students and other members of the College Community to explore the neighborhoods that make Baltimore so unique.

On the first Mission: Mobtown outing in October, participants conducted a scavenger hunt of sorts in the City's Mt. Vernon neighborhood, collecting items that defined the area, known for its arts and culture. Armed with Polaroid cameras, the group members were encouraged to take notes and pictures, talk to residents and merchants and collect flyers and other materials reflecting the life of the neighborhood.

A similar activity is planned for the Fells Point event. Mission:Mobtown organizers are considering future events in Hampden, Federal Hill, Locust Point, Canton and other neighborhoods bordering Patterson Park.

Co-sponsored by the Year of the City, the Loyola College Honors Program and the American Studies minor, Mission:Mobtown was inspired by a "City as Text" walking research activity Honors Program director Nick Miller participated in in New Orleans several years ago. "Mobtown," one of Baltimore's many nicknames, dates back to the 1830s, when the City's great ethnic diversity and struggles with political corruption led to a number of riots.
