Campus Ministry sponsors “Faith in the City” Visual and Graphic Arts Contest

Pull out your paints, pencils, sculpting tools, cameras or graphic equipment!  As part of its contribution to the Year of the City, Campus Ministry is sponsoring a visual and graphic arts contest on the theme of “faith in the City.”  The contest is open to the entire Loyola community.  Entries will be judged by a jury panel that includes members of Loyola’s Fine Arts and Communications Departments.  Cash prizes will be awarded to first ($250), second ($175) and third place ($100) finishers.  All qualified entries will be featured in an exhibition in the JustArt Gallery (Cohn Hall) from February  5 – March 15.  The deadline for submitting entries is Friday, February 2, 2007 at 5:00pm.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Each piece of work submitted should somehow reflect or interpret the theme “faith in the city.”  Understanding of this theme may include, but is not limited to 1) expressions or evocations of religious faith or spirituality in Baltimore; and/or 2) expressions or evocations of Loyola’s faith in the city of Baltimore.  Each piece of work should be executed in good taste and appropriate to the stated theme.
  • All work submitted must be the original work product of the contest entrant.
  • In the event of questions of authorship, the work will not be accepted for consideration.
  • Entrants may exercise their creativity by determining the visual or graphic arts medium that they wish to choose.  This may include, but is not limited to, original photography, original sketches, paint, watercolor, sculpture, collage, computer generated design, etc.
  • Given the limited size of the JustArt Gallery, it is recommended and encouraged that works of art to be entered be kept modest in scale.
  • All entries must be “gallery-ready” to be hung/displayed including mounting or framing.
  • On the back or bottom of the work, or attached to it in some suitable fashion, entrants should fasten a computer generated index card or label that includes the following information: name, address, mail stop number (for students), personal classification (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, grad student [include department/program], administrator [include title], staff, faculty [include department]), e-mail address, best phone number.
  • An appropriate jury will select the prize winners from the works submitted.
  • Pieces of work to be entered must be submitted to the Campus Ministry office (Cohn Hall) by Friday, February 2, 2007 (the end of the first week of classes for the spring semester).  The works must be physically delivered to Cohn Hall before 5 p.m. on that date.

The official opening of the “Faith in the City” exhibition will take place on February 5, 2007.  If prize winners have not been announced previously, they will be announced on that occasion.
