Students Write Personal Mission Statements for the Year of the City “What do you see as your potential role in the Year of the City?” That’s the question that David Belz asked students in his The Contemporary Essay course to address in their first assignment. The assignment is part a semester-long exploration of the formal and aesthetic development of the modern essay in light of contemporary social, cultural and technological contexts. Students in the course examine samples from a number of authors in order to gain an understanding of how essay writers approach their blank slates and make their thematic and rhetorical choices. Integrated into this activity is an exploration of the Year of the City through a variety of activities, readings, on-campus events and discussions. In preparation for crafting their own personal mission statements for the Year of the City, students read in-class texts and explored pages of this web site, including the “The Mission of the Year of the City.” Their reflections, some of which are linked below, are wonderful resources for enhancing the reflection of the Loyola community as a whole about the purposes and foci of the Year of the City.
