Urban Symposium

Ministering in the Urban Setting: Encounters with God, Congregation and Self

Monday, April 16, 2007
9a.m. – 2p.m.
Maguire Hall, Evergreen Campus

Loyola’s Graduate Department of Pastoral Counseling and Spiritual Care invites interested persons to join urban ministers from the Baltimore-Washington area for a day of dialogue and deliberation on the challenges and opportunities of urban care.  The event addresses issues such as building congregational strategies, developing a relationship with God and creating approaches to self care.

Sponsored by the College’s Year of the City initiative, designed to celebrate Baltimore’s history and culture and consider the challenges faced by the City, this symposium is part of the 30th anniversary celebration of Loyola’s Department of Pastoral Counseling and Spiritual Care.

Scheduled presentations are as follows:

  • “Dragon Riding Lessons: Nurturing the Inner Life of the Minister”
Pastoral Counseling Professor Robert Wicks, Psy.D., an authority on secondary stress and self-care of the minister, offers a practical guide to the rewards and challenges of contemporary ministry.
  • "Attending to the Minister's Families: Some Essential Leadership Skills"
Rev. Tom Rodgerson, Ph.D., of the American Association of Pastoral Counseling, addresses the commitments ministers have to various people in their lives.
  • “Preserving Your True Self and Your Deepest Desire in Minister”
Rev. Donelda Cook, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist, discusses how clergy can deal with the competing demands placed on their time and resources.

Seating for the symposium is limited.  The $20 fee includes lunch.  Reserve a seat today by contacting Brenda Helsing at (410) 617-7614 or bhelsing@loyola.edu, or download the reservation form.
