A Message from the President Welcome to the new Year of the City website at Loyola College in Maryland. I am confident that you will find here everything you need to learn about the inspirations and purposes of the Year of the City, as well as up-to-date information about the many ways you can participate in this initiative. In the months leading up to the Year of the City, it has given me great pleasure to witness the enthusiasm and spirit of common enterprise that have marked the Loyola College community. In all quarters of the university and in conversations with friends in the greater Baltimore community, the members of the Loyola family have eagerly taken up the question of how Loyola’s presence in Baltimore shapes the way we approach Catholic and Jesuit higher education. The array of projects and events that have been planned in light of this reflection—from lecture series and new courses about Baltimore and civic engagement, to urban research proposals and enhanced community partnerships—suggests a comprehensive commitment, one that is characteristic of a university that aspires to be fully immersed in human society and responsive to its concerns. It was this kind of commitment, animated and shaped by the distinctively religious mission of the Society of Jesus, that led the founders of Loyola College to establish a school in the heart of the great city of Baltimore. While the College has since moved outside of the commercial center of the City, its appreciation of Baltimore’s culture and history endures, as does its dedication to the progress of its citizens, especially those who reside at the margins of the City’s life. As we renew these commitments during the Year of the City, I invite you to consider your own contribution to this initiative. And I encourage you to return to this website throughout the year as a way of remaining involved in ongoing and fruitful dialogue about how we might live our mission as a Catholic and Jesuit university in Baltimore. Rev. Brian F. Linnane, S.J. President
