Mariefred Evans

  • Class Year2019

  • DegreeB.A. Political Science

Mariefred’s time at Loyola offered myriad opportunities for her to learn, grow, and ultimately become Loyola Ready for her career. She works as a contractor for the Department of Homeland Security’s Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office in Washington, D.C., where she focuses on informing Congress and the American public about the projects her department is working on to protect the nation. “I cover chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and health security threats, and I help the people who defend and protect our nation daily, translating what they do on a basic level.” Mariefred earned her B.A. in Political Science from Loyola in 2019 with a specialization in national security studies. In one of her classes, her professor assigned students to write a memo to a Congress member, asking them to increase or decrease their funding. She found this hands-on experience invaluable. “Learning how to write and learning how to write for government are very different things.” She credits Loyola’s rigorous academics and an invaluable internship on Capitol Hill with preparing her to begin her career with confidence. On campus, Mariefred cheered on the Greyhounds as cheerleading captain and shared her Loyola experience to prospective students as a Greyhound Ambassador student tour guide. Whether she was in Reitz Arena or working with her friends in the undergraduate admission office, she says, “At the end of the day, we all had the same rooted sense of belonging because we were all inspired to make Loyola a better place than it already is.”
