Stephanie Flores-Koulish, Ph.D., associate professor of education, is an ardent believer in the Jesuit value of cura personalis, or care for the whole person. Dr. Flores-Koulish received her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Boston College. Her experience as an adopted person influences her research, which focuses on issues around transracial and cultural adoption and media literacy education. Dr. Flores-Koulish likes working at an institution focused on social justice—and she believes in Loyola’s mission: “When students choose Loyola for their graduate work over one of our competitors, they are choosing an institution that has dedicated faculty who all believe in a Jesuit mission,” she says. “I keep Loyola’s Jesuit ideals at the top of my mind and heart, and I try to bring them to bear as I plan my syllabi and daily agendas.”

What’s different about a Loyola education is we truly value the idea of cura personalis for our students—and for their future students. This is not simply a degree to be purchased, but intellectual engagement, which lingers in the hearts and minds of the learners.
