Inge Heyer, Ph.D., believes Loyola’s emphasis on social justice prepares students for challenges in the real world. “Loyola presents its students with a large variety of tools, which give them the potential to do a lot of good in this world,” says Dr. Heyer who grew up in Berlin, Germany. Dr. Heyer earned a Bachelor of Science in Astronomy and Physics from Smith College in Massachusetts; she holds a M.S. in Astronomy from the University of Hawaii in Honolulu and a Ph.D. in Science Education from the University of Wyoming in Laramie. Dr. Heyer has published numerous books on science education and astronomy teaching, including Investigating Astronomy, which is used in courses at Loyola. She is the co-convention chair of Shore Leave, a Baltimore-based science fiction convention, and she encourages and recruits Loyola students to present their undergraduate research at the convention. “Loyola faculty concentrate on teaching, their first and most important task. I constantly hear and read of faculty coming up with new and innovative ways to teach their course materials, and everyone is very willing to share,” she says. Students may be surprised to learn that Dr. Heyer has studied Japanese martial arts for almost 40 years and has a black belt in Judo and Shotokan Karate.
