Janine Holc, Ph.D., professor of political science, says Loyola’s political science department prepares students to be global citizens in a professional environment. “A liberal arts education enables people to see connections among multiple perspectives, and this is invaluable to any employer,” says Holc, who holds a bachelor’s degree from Illinois State University and a master’s and Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins University. In developing her courses, she often works with Loyola’s Center for Community, Service, and Justice (CCSJ) to incorporate service-learning experiences into her courses, which she finds have a great impact on students. Holc’s research includes Catholic-Jewish relations and the politics of Holocaust memory in Eastern Europe, with a focus Poland. For Holc, the best part of working at Loyola is the support she receives from colleagues and students alike: “I feel supported when I try to innovate in the classroom, and I feel supported when I develop a new idea for my scholarship,” she says. Holc, who served as the chair of the political science department from 1997-2001, adds: “You don’t find this type of support at many universities, as a professor.”
