Theresa Nguyen, Ph.D.

  • Academic Focus Chemistry

Theresa Nguyen, Ph.D., assistant professor of chemistry, knew she wanted to be a scientist when she was 5 years old. Her parents emigrated from Vietnam, and she was the first of her family to be born in the United States. Dr. Nguyen grew up in Southern California and earned her Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from UCLA. Dr. Nguyen, who completed her B.S. in Biochemistry from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, partly credits her success to her own Jesuit education. “Finding science—or wonder, or Love, or God—in all things is an act of joy and gratitude,” she says. “If I can get my students hooked onto that perspective, then I hope they will continue articulating their wonder both in words and in action, giving back to the community what they have received so abundantly at Loyola.” One of Dr. Nguyen's favorite aspects of teaching chemistry is conducting research with her students on how the regular consumption of probiotics could help lower cholesterol.

I teach at Loyola because I love the people at Loyola—we truly do belong to each other here, and it shows in the ways we support one another.
